There is one author I know I can *always* turn to for a properly funny rom com read: Lindsey Kelk. She is the queen of writing novels that are jam-packed with loveable characters that are super relatable in their awkwardness, with cringe-worthy dating disasters. And since the protagonist still ends up with a swoon-worthy hottie, there may be hope yet for the rest of us. And One in a Million is the perfect addition to her already fantastic collection of novels.
When I'm in the mood for a properly funny and witty romantic comedy read, there is one author I know I can *always* turn to: Lindsey Kelk. She is the queen of writing novels that are jam-packed with loveable characters that are super relatable in their awkwardness, with cringe-worthy dating disasters that make me realise that, you know, things could be worse than they are in real life. And since the protagonist still ends up with a swoon-worthy hottie, there may be hope yet for the rest of us.
One in a Million is her latest novel and it tells the tale of Annie, a savvy social media specialist who together with her best friend has set up her own business revolutionising the relatively new world of digital marketing. As if running your own business in marketing as a woman wasn't tricky enough already; Annie feels she always has to proof her merit, not in the least in front of Charlie who runs a more traditional marketing agency from the same office building. So when her role and skills are questioned once again, Annie makes a bold bet: she'll make whoever walks through the door of their office next Instagram famous in just 30 days...
This book is such a delightful summery read; it's sweet, romantic and with a lol a minute it's entertaining on every single page. Annie may have a strong competitive streak but she's still a super loveable protagonist and one you cannot help but root for even when her situation seems impossible to come back from.
And then there is the super cute romantic romantic storyline, excuse me while I swoon for a moment. If you read a lot of novels within this genre then the storyline developments may not have come as a great surprise to you but that doesn't it make it any less of a joy to read. Yes, it may be a tad predictable but let's be honest, we're all hooked because of the ups-and-downs in the journey, not the inevitable happily ever after destination. And the journey is a great one.
There is a reason Lindsey Kelk is one of my absolute favourite women's fiction authors, and with One in a Million she has reaffirmed once more why I love her so much. If you want hilarious, no-nonsense rom coms with empowering 20 and 30-something leading ladies, then look no further than Lindsey's fantastic novels.
One in a Million is a perfect Rom-Com! I honestly absolutely loved this book, it made me laugh out loud and also made my heart throb at times.
One in a Million is a perfect Rom-Com! Following the lives of Annie the Digital marketer and Dr. Samuel Page, the historian.
Annie, is well known as the go-to person for social media. Her and best friend Miranda, who are in the process of developing there start up business, end up making a bet with the Advertising Agency across the hall, for Annie to make a random person, insta famous in just 30 days.
Dr. Page, the man who walked in the café at the wrong time and is now Annie’s new target. Dr. Page who purely dislikes social media and keeps himself to himself. With Annie determined to win the bet, she creates the boyfriend bootcamp, for Dr. Page, who has recently been dumped by his now ex-girlfriend and then all the drama starts!
I adored the characters Annie and Sam, and felt like I was in the book supporting Annie all the way.
I honestly absolutely loved this book, it made me laugh out loud and also made my heart throb at times. I enjoyed it so much that I did not want it to end and tried putting off reading it, but unfortunately I just could not help myself.
This is the first Romantic Comedy, book I have read. I will be definitely looking out for more in the future and also be looking out for more books from Lindsey Kelk.
Lindsey Kelk uses some, short snappy phrases, that make you giggle out loud to yourself when reading.
This is a beautifully written, uplifting story which will keep you entertained and make you feel happy. It deserves to be a big hit.
On the face of it, this is a "chic lit" book featuring the usual cast of characters (best friends, gay mate, handsome neighbours, slightly disfunctional family). However, this book is much more in-depth than that. It's funny and intelligent, much like its chief character and narrator, Annie. I fell in love with Annie and Sam. Their story made me laugh out loud, and occasionally cry. I was caught up in the story, didn't want to put it down, finished it within 2 days, then wished I hadn't as I wanted to carry on enjoying it. There's a definite feel-good factor to this book. It's beautifully written, with wit and insight which extends beyond Annie and Sam to the proliferal characters, who were well rounded and believable. I particularly liked the way the author started and ended the book with the same premise, again a sign of a well-written story. I really, really loved this book and would highly recommend it .
Lindsey Kelk's new book is as full of fun and mishaps as her previous books have been. It's a deliciously long roller coaster of a ride - who will win the bet? You'll be rooting for Annie long before the end. I loved it!
I've read all of Lindsey Kelk's books and I was thrilled to be selected to review this one!
It's deliciously long, and full of fun and mishaps as her books always are. I couldn't put it down! As the tale unfolds and you see Samuel gradually unbending under the "boyfriend boot camp" tutorial of Annie, you just know how you want this to end, and it's fingers crossed all the way! A great read.
A very modern laugh out loud romantic comedy combined with a sensitive touch. Great Summer escapism!
Our very likeable but scatty heroine, Annie Higgins, throws herself into her work for a new social media company following the discovery that her ex-boyfriend has got engaged. In a rash moment she allows her competitive nature to take over her common sense and accepts a bet to make a complete stranger famous in 30 days by getting him 20,000 followers. A series of very funny challenges face Annie as she attempts to make the unwilling target, Dr Samuel Page, famous. The outcome of the romantic storyline is predictable from the start, but the process of getting there is extremely funny.
A funny and witty take on Pygmalion for the digital and social media generation!
A fun modern take on Pygmalion. Annie Higgins works in social media and makes a bet that she can make anyone famous on Instagram within a month. Enter socially hapless historian Dr. Samuel Page. In true Eliza Dolittle fashion, Annie gives Sam a makeover and sets about helping him to win his girlfriend back by becoming a better man. The superficial changes aren't all that alters in both of their lives though.
This was funny and a witty take on the story we know in Pygmalion or My Fair Lady. A great light-hearted read and perfect for a happy summer read.
Annie has to make a stranger famous on Instagram within 30 days due to a bet. She is running her own business and trying to make it in a modern world. She doesn't count on falling in love while pushing the stranger, so she has to sort out her feelings and change her life. Great book
This book, by an author I like, is about a bet made with Annie to make a total stranger famous on Instagram within 30 days. When she meets Sam, who is not modern and needs a total makeover, she has to think about her life and what she wants. This is a great chick lit book with laugh out loud bits in it, perfect to take on holiday. Annie didn't expect to fall in love during her bet, but she can't help it.
The perfect pick-me-up. Half the time it felt like I was having a conversation with a mate rather than reading a book written by a stranger.
Annie Higgins is a social media guru. If you want to be noticed online, she's the girl you go to. She can, her colleagues say, make anyone famous. The advertising agency across the hall decide to put her to the test and Annie accepts their bet: to make a stranger Instagram famous in 30 days. But when they pick Dr Page, a man who'd be happier in a museum archive and who doesn't see the point of Facebook, has she taken on more than she can manage?
If I'm honest, I'd been having a pretty rubbish week and then this stopped onto my doormat. It was the perfect pick-me-up. It was very funny (I genuinely laughed out loud multiple times) and it was very relatable. Half the time it felt like I was having a conversation with a mate rather than reading a book written by a stranger. This was the first Lindsey Kelk book I'd read, despite being told how great she was, and now I'm wondering why it took me so long!
A light-hearted, fast paced book that I absolutely loved. Didn't want to put it down. Highly recommend for summer reading.
What a great book. One in a Million is a modern day story focussed around social media. How do you get new followers, can you take someone who is completely unknown and get a million followers within 30 days? How do they decide who to pick?
Read the book and find out - I don't think you are going to be disappointed.
It's a lovely heart-warming summer read!
This was my first Lindsey Kelk book and I am not disappointed. I really liked the style of writing and the character voice as well as being invested in the plot and the characters themselves. I don't read rom coms enough and One in a Million was the way to go. It's a lovely heart-warming summer read!
An entertaining 21st century rom com that will make you smile!
One In A Million is a hilarious chick lit rom com tale set in London's digital marketing world. When Annie agrees to a bet to vastly boost the social media presence of an unknown tenant in her office building she has no idea what she is letting herself in for. The focus of her campaign, Dr Samuel Page, is an unsuspecting academic who is an extreme 'late adopter' of digital technology. He has also suffered a recent relationship breakup so by agreement Annie's efforts are directed to helping him win back his ex while raising his online presence. Inevitably, as Sam and Annie spend time with each other, a friendship develops which could open up other possibilities... The Annie/Sam story is interwoven with tales about Annie's friends and family and the small business she runs with Miranda. Lindsey Kelk is talented at bringing comedy and wit into the story, and there were a number of laugh-out-loud moments. The only slight downside of this book for me was the amount of fast moving dialogue between 'cool' social media savvie colleagues - at times I felt that their exchanges were quite hard to follow.
I enjoyed One In A Million and I would definitely read another book by Lindsey Kelk.
Lindsey has done it again! She's written another excellent book! A must read!
I jumped at the chance to review One in a Million by Lindsey Kelk as I have loved her other books and I'm a massive fan of hers. You really warm to the main character Annie, and her love interest Samuel is a great character too. The book has lots of funny moments, I was always laughing, but it has some sweet moments. I will admit it's not as good as the I Heart series Lindsey is so well known for but it's still excellent. I really loved it. I'm not great at giving reviews as I never know what to write! So all I'm going to say is this book is a must read for any Lindsey Kelk fan and any book lover who loves a bit of comedy and romance thrown into one!
A good holiday read!
A very modern take on boy meets girl. Set in modern day, the story follows the manic life of digital marketeer Annie Higgins. She takes on a bet with her landlord that she can't make 'the next person to walk through that door' Instagram famous (that's 20,000 followers). A very light hearted read, but well written and well thought out. There are even some laugh out loud moments. I'm sure you'll be reading this one on the beach this year!
A hilarious account of life as a 30-something in a fast paced world.
The story that Lindsey Kelk has woven for our enjoyment follows our main character Annie Higgins, she has given up on ever finding love – she is far too busy getting the business that she has set up with her best friend off the ground and profitable. Annie has a funny relationship with the Advertising company across from her in the shared building where they have their offices. The owner of the ad agency does not seem to understand what she does for her clients with her social media agency – in a moment of anger she accepts their challenge to make a completely random person Instagram-famous in just thirty days.
What ensues throughout the book is a hilarious account of life as a 30-something in a fast paced world where everyone spends a lot of time on social media, a love story of modern day and some very heartwarming and easily identifiable mishaps and blunders.
Oh Annie! What a joy to meet Annie, the heroine of Lindsey Kelk's latest novel.
Annie, together with best friend Mir are partners running a digital marketing company although maybe not as smoothly as they would like. Together with office assistant Brian it’s a constant battle to keep Contact London afloat
This means all work and not much time for play for Annie but a challenge over coffee by Charlie who works in the same building sees her determined to succeed. Enter Sam Page -or Samuel as he wishes to be addressed- a newly arrived Historian renting work-space nearby who unwittingly becomes the subject of the challenge and who may regret walking into the coffee shop at that moment.
For the next month Annie takes us through her life with all the ups and downs that entails as she endeavours to win the bet with Charlie. Add in the less than favourable responses from Sam; input of two new office interns, jesting from fellow work-space colleagues, as well as Wellington the aloof cat and the circumstances are tangible.
Lindsey's style of writing is perceptive and intuitive yet overall funny & quick-witted and I found myself laughing, smiling, despairing and nodding at Annie's antics. We all need an Annie shaped figure in our lives.
A great read which covered a whole range of emotions and I was only sorry when the novel ended. Hopefully there will be a follow-up title planned!
An easy read that I couldn't put down! Characters that are modern and easy to relate to! I would love a sequel!
This book was everything I wanted it to be and more!
I needed to escape and One in a Million helped me to do that. It used the power of social media which was easily relatable and with likeable characters throughout, I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end!
A nice, easy summer read. Perfect for vacations or staycations!
It's a fast paced, old fashioned love story set in a very modern age. Fabulous characters, beautifully written. I loved this book from start to finish.
Annie Higgins is a young woman trying desperately to make a success of her digital marketing agency. Recently dumped, she's given up on falling in love and is putting all her energy into her business. A competitive, sassy character, she can't resist the challenge of a bet with her co workers - to make a random stranger instagram famous. Enter Dr Samuel Page, a nerdy historian professor with a fashion sense stuck in the 80's and a complete absence of social graces. Throughout the course of the challenge Annie finds out so many new things about herself and crucially, about what is important in life.
I raced through this laugh out loud book and aside from the humour, there were some very poignant moments which gave the story great depth. With a supporting cast of entertaining characters, the majority of them highly likeable, it was a book that was difficult to leave.
An old fashioned love story set in a very modern age, it had all the things I love - witty dialogue, characters you really care about and a fast paced story. The ending was exactly as I hoped it would be, leaving me with a satisfied smile.
I can't recommend this book highly enough and I'm confident everyone who reads it will love with it as much as I did.
A love story with a difference and a modern slant for today's social media users to enjoy. Written as well as ever by one of my favourite chick lit authors.
I'm a big fan of Lindsey Kelk, especially her 'I Heart' series, so this book was a little different with new standalone characters to get to know and discover. And just a few pages in it was easy to see that Lindsey Kelk's writing is as sharp as ever and the dialogues and asides still as wry and funny as ever and the pages are deliciously peppered throughout with her tongue-in-cheek irony.
The story is a bit of a reverse of 'My Fair Lady' told from the opposite side (in these times of strong feminism it seems apt)
I wondered at first how the whole idea of the bet was going to work (not being too 'up' on how Instagram works in reality so that was an interesting extra for me to learn about whilst reading the story)
I personally felt that the whole approach of getting Samuel Page to agree in the first place was a bit too easy but once the story got going and Annie started to realise her feelings for Samuel it developed into a really lovely story with lovable and relatable characters and situations that I enjoyed reading very much.
It had a few twists that I didn't see coming and had me frantically zooming through to find out how the book ended. Lindsey Kelk fans won't be disappointed!
A hugely enjoyable read with acute observations given with warmth and reality. A great summer or winter read.
A hugely enjoyable read. I thought I might be a bit old but great fun and learnt a thing or two! Initially a bit Bridget Jones-esque but developed into it’s own style. Well written and acute observation of relationships and a city working environment with a great contrast to the academic world. Likeable characters and a great summer read. Would thoroughly recommend. I think everyone will fall for Adam.
I would recommend this book to everyone who loves a good office romance story.
I really enjoyed reading One in a Million. I have read many of the series by Lindsay Kelk. I related to the story as I have set up a business and know the challenges involved with setting up a business.
I thought it was really funny that they had a challenge to make a complete stranger famous on social media. The build up of trying to change Sam was so good. I loved that she fell in love with him in the end. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves a good office romance story.
A challenge, a stranger and social media are at the forefront of this fabulous book...
Friends, a new and struggling company and a bet make for a brilliant read.
Annie takes on a bet to get a stranger famous on a social media platform in just 30 days. The stranger being Dr. Samuel Page an Historian.Annie gets Samuel an amazing media following by getting him to change his appearance, which causes quite a stir, especially when Annie starts to fall in love with Sam. Life in the fast lane starts to make Annie take a long hard look at her life.
This book is a classic boy meets girl with a few hidden twists along the way.
A great summer read that I would recommend.
This is the first book that I’ve read by Lindsey Kelk and I have to say that I was not disappointed. One in a Million is a great summer read. The plot is in parts is hilarious and is very romantic. I think that this book would be an ideal book to take on holiday and a great poolside read, as it was easy to pick up and put down. I enjoyed One in a Million and would recommend it!
