Powerful coming of age, black lives matter, novel detailing racial struggles present in this day and age. Heart-breaking and heart-warming, Dear Martin, is one of those books you just have to read.
Dear Martin, follows Justyce when he is wrongly arrested due to the stereotypes society puts on his skin. Each page is brimming with raw emotion - anger, love, hate, hope, despair, doubt and sorrow - as Justyce reviews the life he leads; neither belonging to the black or white community. Through letters addressed to Dr Martin Luther King, Justyce lays his heart and soul out to readers of all ages.
Short and bittersweet, you won't be able to put this book down until you've finished the very last page.
All I can say is that although hallowing and shocking, it is an important story with a vital message that needs to be read. It will hit you in so many ways and all for the better - a book that is rewarding to read and highly recommended.
Dear Martin is a great book and I will definitely recommend it to my friends. It covers huge issues that are not often written about. Also it was very gripping I read it in one day.
Dear Martin is a great book about racism. Justyce is a good smart kid set to go to Ivy League college Yale. But after trying to help an ex-girlfriend of his, he is arrested after doing nothing wrong. The police officer assumes he is a criminal trying to rob his ex-girlfriend because of the colour of his skin. Whereas actually she is the one extremely drunk and about to drive home but because she is white the officer assumes she is innocent. Even his own mother doesn’t want him to date a white girl.
Dear Martin is eye opening, it has made me more aware of what's going on around me and its honest plot line has encouraged me to speak out more about race.
This book was so touching, and inspiring, with the plot being delicately thought out and a clear message being put across. I have been made more aware of racial diversity and how equality has not been achieved in some areas like many people say, and this is thanks to Nic Stone.
Beautiful and startling, this novel combines two fundamental elements of amazing literature; beautiful writing and startling subject matter.
An ever present headline in the media, racism and society’s attitude towards it magnifies the cracks in a seemingly perfect world. It is easier to avoid them. To shut one’s eyes or, even easier, to look away and simply ignore the problem. So it takes courage to write about it and even more to do so well. Yet well is what Nic Stone has done.
This book will change your attitude towards the story told and the story to. Because there are never just two sides to the story.
The truth and nothing but the truth.
5/10. Well written but I didn’t like the style of the book.
5/10. The intention of the book is very good, and most of the book is very well written. On the other hand, at times it could be a bit confusing and jumped around a bit much. Also I didn’t find this book to be the right type for me I found it a bit extreme and felt it didn’t convey it’s point about racism in the right way. As I said though it was well written for most of it but for me the way the ideas were presented was a bit weird.
This book lives up to the hype, it'll go down a classic.
There is so much to say about this book. It is brutally honest but brings a voice to the conversation that needs to be had, especially in America. If you loved The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas you will not be disappointed. Nic Stone writes apologetically and it was so refreshing to read her book; it's bold, fierce and honest. We need this book more now than ever. This book lives up to the hype, it'll go down a classic. Safe to say I loved this book through and through despite the difficult topics- in fact it's the way Nic Stone wrote and tackles issues, fitting all the arguments gracefully. Read this book and then tell everyone else to read it!
This book deal with a tough subject in a sensitive way but people (not just teens) will want to read it.
Dear Martin is a really powerful book. It's quick to read and it's quite fast paced and concentrates on prejudice and race.
This book is very thought provoking and I enjoyed reading it. I think that this book will appeal to YA readers and adults alike.
I like the way the book tells the story through narrative and letters to Martin Luther King.
This was a beautiful story that I recommend for everyone to read.
I really enjoyed this thought provoking story about a young man called Justyce who is trying to find his place in the world and in the community he lives in during a time of heated anger between police and young men of a different colour to them. It was frightening reading about the behaviour you needed when approached by a police man, not just standard politeness but much more than that. I found myself holding my breath reading parts of the story and how brutal life could be for these characters, even so Justyce was still reaching out for hope and change by reading about Dr. Martin Luther King, a man who emanated love and peace and justice for all. This was a beautiful story that I recommend for everyone to read. It would be lovely to think we were all treated the same but the sad truth is we are not and this story captures this.
I really enjoyed this book and I think it will stick with me forever.
This was a moving and compelling book tackling the problem of racism. “Dear Martin” explained that some people even now continue to face racism, but nobody wants to admit it. Martin is a clever kid trying to live the way Martin Luther King lived.
But he is surrounded by racism and with black kids getting shot on a daily basis, being tolerant and passive is no easy task. Things then take a turn for the worse when Martin ends up in handcuffs, and school life becomes an endless struggle. I really enjoyed this book and I think it will stick with me forever. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of 10. I would give the story 4 stars out of 5.
Dear Martin is a short (207 pages) but very powerful story that is a raw, captivating read that I seriously could not put down. A must read for 2018
I believe that due to this length it created impact and pace for the reader.
The story follows a 17 year old African American teenager named Justyce. He is a good young man who wants to follow in the steps of Martin Luther King. Through the third person narration alternating between Justyce’s letters to MLK, the reader gets an insight into some of the experiences that happen to black teenage boys. How they cope with the knowledge that they are judged and could be murdered due to the colour of their skin or by the type of clothes that they wear. Nic Stone has created a very emotive read as it’s hard to comprehend that this prejudice still happens in the world today.
You need to go into this story with an open heart and eyes and learn something from the authors experience as she has loosely based it on true events.
This book would be great as a classroom/debate session read as it deals with various equality related issues and values, it’s not just about the shooting. I would happily recommend the book to 14+ confident readers due to the content of violence, death, racism, police brutality and to lighten the story a touch of romance, alas that is not without its own consequences. A must read for 2018, especially if you enjoyed The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas.
