"A packed full crime thriller with a strong sibling bond and assailants encroaching from every direction."
A packed full crime thriller with a strong sibling bond and assailants encroaching from every direction. Claire Deveraux and her siblings find themselves caught up with gangs and criminals after an unfortunate coincidence of events sees Claire and her sister dragged into the middle of separate crimes. Claire Deveraux has a dream job working at the US embassy in Paris, but while sightseeing at the Louvre she find a woman dying in the restroom, with the man behind the attack after her, a thumb drive and the victim’s incomprehensible last words, Claire finds herself in the middle of a mystery that puts everything in danger. Meanwhile, back in Texas, her sister Megan witnesses an attack that leaves her boyfriend dead and her fleeing with a valuable stash of stolen diamonds. Fleeing her pursuers, she heads to her sister and Europe. As both mysteries develop, Claire and Megan’s whole family is at risk, but will Megan be able to get away with stealing the diamonds, and will Claire be able to figure out the puzzle of the Louvre attack. Either one of the sister’s storylines could have been put to use in a crime thriller of its own, so having the two together, with unknown assailants and consequences makes for a packed storyline. The characters are interesting, the bond between the triplets, Claire, Megan and Boyd comes across strongly as they’re willing to defend the other (usually Megan) regardless of circumstance. Claire’s deafness also added another layer of complexity to the plot, showing what working and living alone is like for someone who is deaf, while also using it to build tension during the times Claire feels vulnerable. The plot goes through peaks and troughs of action, with pursuers on every corner, plenty of opportunity for mistaken identity between the two sisters. Readers may also need to suspend their belief slightly in the face of violent criminal villains that seem remarkably restrained and easy to outwit when chasing down their targets. In all, ‘Every Silent Thing’ by Alan Brenham is a quick and easy to read crime thriller with plenty to sink your teeth into.
