The fight between good and evil with humanity caught in the middle. Single mother Joanne Middleton and her daughter Samantha have gained the unwanted attention of a dark malevolent entity that calls himself The Puppeteer. Using his powers he brainwashes and coerces a human assassin to track them down and end Samantha’s life. Meanwhile Met Police Officer Chris Ryan experiences a miraculous recovery from a gunshot wound at work and an awakening that sees him told that there is someone important to humanity that he must protect. Chis and Joanne’s families are thrown together amongst moments of supernatural horror and threat.
Circle of Innocents by Stephen D. Curtis is a twisted story. Wayne’s corruption reminded me a little bit of The Clockwork Orange, and is demonstrated throughout the plot with acts of violence towards women, which doesn’t make for easy reading. The relationship between Joanne and Samantha is well crafted, they have a very close bond and are brought even closer by the horrors they are experiencing. The family German Shepherd Harley was a standout character for me, I think that the author uses him really well to change the atmosphere. The narrative has plenty of twists to keep you guessing and a dramatic ending as the fight against Wayne and The Puppeteer reaches its peak. This is a dark and twisted story about the spiritual fight between good and evil that could appeal to fans of horror and supernatural fiction.
