Reformation Synopsis

Like all volumes in the History of Church and Theology in Sources series, the new volume on the Reformation also offers concise, informative texts with explanations for self-study and to support lectures and seminars. The proven volume by Heiko Augustinus Oberman has been completely revised after a quarter of a century to reflect the latest research. All translations were checked and, if necessary, corrected, the introductions were rewritten and the bibliographical information updated. The source selection was changed in favor of a stronger consideration of the socio-historical developments and expanded in the area of ??the denominational age. Perspectives on gender history and the question of how Christians deal with Jews are also taken into account. Chronologically, the collection begins in the immediate run-up to the Reformation, with the dispute over Reuchlin's position on dealing with the Jewish writings and the subsequent dark man's letters. The main focus is still on the implementation phase of the Reformation, with the theological history of important texts by Luther, Zwingli, Melanchthon, Karlstadt, Müntzer and others being supplemented by evidence of the urban Reformation. - The second main part represents the phase of the denominational age based on Lutheranism, Calvinism, Catholicism and Anglicanism. Texts by Johann Gerhard are taken into account as well as by Ignatius Loyola or Johannes Calvin. A final short section gives an insight into the history of the Thirty Years' War and the associated veneration of Gustav Adolf of Sweden, as well as the formulation of the Peace of Westphalia. Anyone who wants to get a first-hand overview of the historically important events between 1500 and 1648 in legible German can confidently access this book.
