A thrilling psychological time-slip horror. Jumping between the events that befall four university students in 1976 and a police investigation into a shooting on campus in 2016, King of Crows by Bill Davidson weaves horror, folklore and supernatural into this psychological thriller. In 1976 we see Dundee University students David and Angela meet and despite their differences fall for one another before things take a turn for the sinister, leaving them paying a heavy price in a fight for survival. Meanwhile DI Dudek’s investigations lead to impossible answers and links back to a missing persons case from 40 years ago. Both storylines progress towards a dramatic climax leaving no one unscathed. A twisting narrative very well told. I thought that King of Crows was a really strong mix of horror and psychological thriller. The incorporation of the horror and supernatural element were seamless, introduced in a way that felt believable before slowly being built upon. The use of the sinister murders of crows helped to build tension and a creepy atmosphere. I was drawn into the tale, and found that switching between the 1976 and 2016 narratives throughout helped to build anticipation, and I was keen to find out how the story would end. Some of the descriptions in the climax under the mill were evocative and felt Stephen King-esque, creating a vivid and horrifying picture. If you’re looking for a psychological thriller with a side of horror, this is a book I would recommend.
