The grisly murder of a young woman sparks an investigation into the occult in North Devon. The brutal attack and murder of a young woman is the first in a string of murders in North Devon that Detective Inspector Rick McCarthy and the team at Barnstable CID must investigate. Their searches lead them down a supernatural road, with the murder seeming to be connected to a Voodoo cauldron. There are a lot of moving parts as the team tries to catch the killer before anyone else dies. This is a well written police procedural with intriguing aspects of the occult throughout the case. The information breakdowns about Voodoo as the team work on the case seem well researched and add a unique twist to the plot. There are a lot of different characters and suspects to keep track of throughout the book, creating a sense that you don’t know who to trust. Rick is an interesting lead character, positively chipper compared to some of the tough, worn and lonely detectives of the genre. It was a nice respite from the murders to see his comfortable relationship with Kay, his partner and the senior forensic pathologist. However it did all seem to end rather quickly. You might need to suspend your belief about the ease of the discovery of the final lot of condemning evidence when you reach the final reveal but the “who” was something I hadn’t seen coming. ‘Vengeance for a Fallen Angel’ is an easy to read mystery that held my attention throughout, kept me on my toes and would appeal to fellow crime readers.
