About

Paintings from India Synopsis

A selection of paintings produced by Muslim artists working in imperial Mughal courts, the Deccani sultanates and the provincial cities of Oudh from the early sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries, including pages from many well-known Mughal illustrated manuscripts are featured in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art" series. The Nasser D. Khalili collection of Indian paintings, comprises works dating from the early 16th to the mid-19th centuries, represents the production of Muslim ateliers such as those within the imperial Mughal courts, the Deccani sultanates and the provincial cities of Oudh. In addition to pages from many well-known Mughal illustrated manuscripts, the collection includes more unusual images, such as one from an almost unknown Akbarnamah. Several of the early Mughal miniatures have European subjects, and 18th and 19th-century works show the stronger connections with Europe that subsequently developed. Among the outstanding paintings in the collection are a 19th-century processional scene four metres in length and a rare early Deccani manuscript used for taking auguries.;This book is intended for art historians, Islamicists, collectors, and curators of Islamic art, specialist art trade, readers with a general interest in the subject.
