A clutch of left-leaning historians and commentators and Churchill polishing his reputation have done much to blacken Stanley Baldwin’s reputation. Baldwin has a great champion in Jeremy Dobson who is out to correct the historical record and offers here an alternative view of the man. He builds a in depth picture of the inter-war years, the complexities of international relations, the coming war and Baldwin’s role as leader at such a vital point in history. Dobson gives the reader a hugely detailed portrait of Baldwin, that rarest of men, a modest polititian.

The Lovereading comment:

Stanley Baldwin may not be considered to be one of the great politicians of the early 20th century but this biography aims to refute the many allegations laid against this much maligned man and to show why he stood up so determinedly for his religious and patriotic beliefs against a public that through the inter war years increasingly rejected him. Unfortunately his stern public facade meant the public never really warmed to him or saw his strong Christian charity and kindness underneath. Here Jeremy Dobson successfully shows the human side of Sir Stanley Baldwin and is incredibly persuasive in showing the reader why Baldwin’s firm views on various matters including pastoral issues and the nightmare of war. He also successfully refutes the accusations made of Baldwin by one of his successors, Sir Winston Churchill, that he was guilty of a deriliction of duty over the defence issues of the time.  The author’s military knowledge coupled with a long term desire to set the record straight has delivered a well researched work in an accessible writing style.
