"The game of Scrabble turns the life around of unhappy Jo Knox after she joins a club for the game in her small town in Yorkshire."
Jo Knox is unhappy: bullied at her job, unlucky in love and lonely at home. But the game of Scrabble, the one thing she loves, turns her life around in Love Letters on Hazel Lane by Jennifer Page.
Jo moved to the small town of Hebbleswick in Yorkshire after her divorce, she discovers that the small town does have one thing that will make her happy—a weekly Scrabble club. After joining, she meets a cast of characters who enrich her life beyond the weekly games she plays. She is challenged to organise a Scrabble festival, which she does with aplomb.
This is the second novel written by Jennifer Page, and readers of her previous novel, The Little Board Game Café will see that they have entered the same universe of that book, with a cross-over of some characters and locations. Like that book, this is a charming novel about the power of game playing and how to rebuild a life after disappointment.
Although the novel could be classified as a romantic comedy, it doesn’t shy away from heavier topics, including coercive control, toxic relationships and the reverberations of childhood bullying. However, the light tone and hopeful ending makes this a heart-warming novel overall.
