"Go to Wyoming, add several snowstorms, three dead bodies, and a sprinkling of espionage and extremism, and it all adds up to this thriller. "
The mystery is bigger and more complicated than expected when Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett discovers a murder in a swirling snow storm in Storm Watch by C.J. Box. Chasing an injured elk, which he puts out of its misery once he finds it, Pickett stumbles across an abandoned vehicle on the mountain, and soon after finds a headless body that has been pulled into an industrial fan at a mysterious and remote building. With the snow piling up, Pickett leaves the body behind, but when he starts asking questions, the mystery deepens.
Pickett seeks answers, but there are plenty of people who wish he wouldn’t be asking the questions, including federal agents and politicians. He learns that the death occurred at a secret high-tech crypto mining facility. Meanwhile, local far right groups try to galvanize support for their plan to have Wyoming secede from the federal government, which also plays a part in the mystery.
Wyoming, the western U.S. state nestled between Montana, Idaho and the Dakotas, is known for its rugged landscape and abundance of animals, and Box paints a beautiful picture of the state. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll delight in the animals mentioned, like antelope, bears, mountain lions, wolves, and most importantly, Pickett’s yellow Labrador, Daisy. It’s a deftly plotted thriller, and marks Box’s twenty-third outing with the game warden.
The snowy atmosphere, the nefarious interested parties and the rugged atmosphere of Wyoming all add up to make this a page turner.
