A wildly entertaining, absolute romp of a historical adventure, and while full of daring deeds and dastardly villains, there is a keen eye for researched detail throughout. Back from the wars and travelling through an England decimated by bubonic plague in 1351, knight Gerard Fox sets out to restore the reputation of his family. On meeting Lady Isabel en route, Fox finds his journey taking an unexpected turn. Fox is an all-out action-hero, and the battle scenes play out so convincingly, it is easy to imagine them on the big screen. Lady Isabel is more than his match, and they are joined in the novel by friends and foe, each living in vivacious colour, firmly set in their character. I will admit to loving the sinners and scoundrels of the piece, they ensure this is very much a good versus evil tale. It is easy to throw yourself in with abandon and allow yourself to be carried along by the story. Boyd Morrison and his sister Beth Morrison have created a wonderful balance between the thrills and spills of an adventurous yarn, and the researched medieval elements. It would appear that this is the start of a series, and what a wonderful introduction it is. Dramatically stimulating and ever so readable, The Lawless Land will abundantly feed a need for thrilling action and fast-moving storytelling.
