1845, Northalbion. Terror spreads through a small mining town as friends and neighbours are mauled to death by the mythical Wolf of Whindale. Caleb, a miner with an inquisitive and sceptical nature, suspects opportunistic murders being disguised as acts of a wild beast. When he is banished by workmates and family for crossing the picket line during a strike, he ends up leaving to work at a strange kind of mine, tasked with finding a magical artefact that has been lost for centuries. The orders come from Mr Siskin, a wealthy man who owns the mine and had most to gain from the deaths that have shaken Caleb's community. Far from home and sensing danger in Siskin's company, Caleb must rely on his wits and his memory to make it back to his town unscathed.
