Big life changes are told in impactful flashes as one woman seeks to rebuild her life amongst the pandemic. ‘Pipette’ by the award winning flash fiction writer Kim Chinquee follows a woman as trouble at home leaves her threatened by her partner and moving out, building a new life and a new home as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic take hold. This is the first flash fiction novel I have read but I found that it was an interesting and unique concept. Each scene is a sparse yet impactful flash that drives the wider story on, giving insight into the main character's mindset, past and personal life. This is a deeply personal story, assisted by the first person narration of the ‘Pipette’, and the reader is drawn in to sympathise with the main character as she looks to rebuild her life and develop a new sense of identity. The author’s skill at presenting detailed scenes with a restricted number of words is on full display here. Throughout, the author manages to build tension, engage the reader's emotions and develop a dimensional character in brief, almost dreamlike snippets. As I read I felt dread as confrontations made her leave her partner and hope as she found new ways to fill her life, using her skills to help during the pandemic and her sports to test her limits, always facing and pushing back against her fears to carve out a new place for herself. I think that this would be of interest to fans of literary fiction and flash fiction. It may also be a great introduction to flash fiction for those who haven’t explored the writing style before.
