About

Skegness Through Time Synopsis

The seaside town of Skegness in Lincolnshire has a rich and fascinating history. The town has altered much over the last 150 years. In 1842, it is recorded that the population of Skegness was only 185 people, described as a ÔÇÿpleasant villageÔÇÖ, whereas today almost 20,000 residents reside in this picturesque town. It was the growth of seaside resorts and tourism that led to such rapid expansion helped by the development of a railway link to the town. The person who made perhaps the biggest impression on the development of Skegness was Billy Butlin. In 1929 he opened a large amusement park on the south side of the pier and later in 1935 built the Butlins Holiday Camp. The town has never looked back and continues to thrive and develop. This unique selection of old and new images and informative captions will be essential reading for anyone who knows and loves this town.
