About

Sandbach, Wheelock & District Through Time Synopsis

In the Domesday Book Sandbach appears as Sanbec and by 1260 is recorded as Sondbache. It has been a Market Town since 1579 when Queen Elizabeth I granted the charter. Over 100 years ago the Elworth/Sandbach name of Foden became synonymous with steam powered road transport worldwide. Later ERF and Foden manufactured diesel powered vehicles at their Sandbach plants. Foden's band is still based in Sandbach and still as popular as ever. Wheelock is one of the Sandbach suburbs visited in this book, mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hoilech or Hoilock. By 1396 it was Quelock but was soon to be called Wheelock after the river that runs through it. We also take a peep at Warmingham and finish this tour at Ettiley Heath. So take a trip into the past and compare the old Sandbach area with how it looked many years ago and how it looks today.
