This Side of Paradise Synopsis
Few author's personal lives have been as intertwined with their writing as that of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The author's popularity may have as much to do with the interest in his personal life as with his writing itself. The story behind "e;This Side of Paradise"e; certainly lends credence to this idea. When Fitzgerald's future wife, Zelda Sayre, broke of their courtship in the summer of 1919, the author returned home to finish work on his first novel in hopes that its publication would bring him a literary fame and financial success that would change Zelda's mind about the prospects of a life together as husband and wife. Despite being nearly rejected by editors at Scribner's the novel was accepted and as a result Zelda agreed to marry him. Set during World War I and immediately following, the novel is the story of Amory Blaine, a young Midwesterner who leaves his home to attend boarding school and eventually Princeton. The book examines the lives and morality of the era's youth through Amory's character, who has a series of romances that eventually lead to his disillusionment. An immediate success ever since its original publication, "e;This Side of Paradise"e; would cement Fitzgerald's position as one of America's premier literary talents of the first part of the 20th century.

About F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University which he left in 1917 to join the army. Fitzgerald was said to have epitomised the Jazz Age, an age inhabited by a generation he defined as ‘grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken’.
In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their destructive relationship and her subsequent mental breakdowns became a major influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Love of the Last Tycoon (his last and unfinished work): six volumes of short stories and The Crack-Up, a selection of autobiographical pieces.
Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940. After his death The New York Times said of him that ‘He was better than he knew, for in fact and in the literary sense he invented a “generation” … he might have interpreted them and even guided them, as in their middle years they saw a different and nobler freedom threatened with destruction.’
