"The environmentalist and vlogger Leena Norms makes self-improvement feel radically doable and fun in the wonderfully grabbable Half-Arse Human"
I must say that I am biased in writing this review because happily Leena is a friend of mine, and that I read an early draft of this book to offer some editorial feedback in exchange for Leena knitting me a cardigan. I hope that this, in and of itself, shows the kind of good egg who is writing this excellent book of tangible, grounded, fun-loving advice.
I am going to summarise some of what I sent to Leena in my feedback to her: In the way that all the best books do, I secretly feel like Leena wrote this specifically for me. I was nodding along, feeling inspired and invigorated and also delighted by her voice and metaphors and way of explaining things which makes 'self-improvement' feel doable and, dare I say it, enjoyable. She is predictably a delight and an inspiration on the page.
I also really appreciated the way that Leena prioritised environmental (the floor is lava) moments throughout, which feels true to her advice about finding your own personal wholearse and weaving it into the things you do. For example, I really appreciated that she took things from the theoretical to the very practical, informing and gently-telling off the reader about, for example, with political overwhelm, how you should engage with your local MP.
It reminded me a lot of Oliver Burkeman's 4000 Weeks, which is a personal Bible for me. I still re-read regularly and find myself constantly remembering or discovering I've forgotten things. I can already see this as a more approachable, youthful, zestier, and accessible teaching of a compatible message of Imperfectionism, which I truly believe is vital medicine for all of us in the modern world. I just know I am going to re-read Leena’s book whenever I need to get my arse back in gear.
