In 1955 the author's family moved from Guildford to Northampton. Although aged sixteen, he had already \"been a railway enthusiast for a long time\", albeit predominantly with an interest in main line. Mugging up on the scant literature on narrow gauge and industrial railways, in 1959 and armed with his first camera, he set about visiting industrial premises of all sorts in his new home county. On entering the world of work, he travelled to new places by bus or in the boss's car and could sometimes borrow a bicycle at lunchtime to get to a site and photograph it. Hence how this lovely collection of photographs, comprising mainly of the author's own photos of the railways at brickwork, clay pits, sand & gravel pits, sewage and cement works and so on, came about.
