This book explains the special needs of real-time video processing and demonstrate how to design algorithms and processing architecture to satisfy them. The book starts with standard visible-camera imaging to make the subject as approachable as possible, and then moves on to introduce thermal imaging. With thermal video, we gain access to several phenomena that are invisible to the human eye, and we can use thermal video processing to make them visible.
The book introduces, in detail, one critical application where real-time processing has been essential: the detection of gas clouds. Real-time processing has enabled systems that issue automated gas leak alerts within seconds of the start of a leak - a speed that is magnitudes faster than existing systems start of a leak while also covering a much larger field of detection.
