Northern Italy Synopsis

This guide covers the eight regions of northern Italy - Lombardy, the Veneto, Piedmont, Liguria, Val d'Aosta, Trentino Alto-Adige, Friuli Venezia-Giulia and Emilia-Romagna. There are chapters devoted to the main towns and their environs, to each of the provinces and to areas of particular natural beauty.;Lombardy has Milan, a fascinating city, with its Gothic cathedral, the Brera Gallery and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper; the Lakes of Garda, Como and Maggiore are well known for their scenery; and the old town of Mantua has the Palozzo Ducale and Palazzo Te. The historic city of Turin is in Piedmont, and Liguria has the port of Genoa with its numerous palaces and the seaside villages of Cinque Terre. The Veneto includes the city of Verona, with its Roman amphitheatre; the university town of Vicenza, rebuilt by Palladio whose villas can be seen all over the region; and mountain scenery in the Dolomites. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia are Trieste and numerous small towns of interest, including Udine and Cividale.
