I do love this author’s structure. We have a crime … or do we? We have a court case but what is Joanna being tried for? We have multi-voices but never a full explanation and so the plot builds in a compulsive spiral of doubt. It is not until the final pages and after twist upon twist that we are finally given a punch in the stomach, an ending that still leaves a question. Did she or didn’t she? Is she mad or not? You’ve got to read this inventive domestic drama to find out. Highly recommended, read it and then all her others, particularly The Donor. She is very special.

Helen FitzGerald is the bestselling author of ten adult and young adult thrillers, including The Donor (2011) and The Cry (2013), which was longlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, and adapted for a major BBC drama. Her 2019 dark-comedy thriller Worst Case Scenario was a Book of the Year in the Literary Review, Herald Scotland, Guardian and Daily Telegraph, shortlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, and won the CrimeFest Last Laugh Award.
