As I'm always fascinated by the reverberating effects down the generations of long-held family secrets, with their often corrosive effects on the lives of everyone involved, the promise of discovering the secrets and why Vicky, now in her early twenties, is only just meeting a grandmother she knows nothing about was one of the reasons I felt drawn to reading this novel. This book has a beautiful cover and was full of promise for an engaging and exciting read.
This is the third book in a trilogy. I have not read the other books but this can easily be read as a stand-alone novel.
Set in the mid nineteen sixties this is a story about Clemence (the grandmother) and Vicky (the granddaughter). Clemence lives in Morocco and the novel covers the short period of time during which Vicky pays her a visit. There are family secrets and scandals from the past which means that Clemence and Vicky know very little about each other.
The main features of the narrative are the misadventures of Vicky and a love story featuring Clemence. I have given the book four stars because of the writing and the beautiful descriptions of Morocco. Details of the scented air, the wonderfully spiced food, the scenery and the heat, all paint a vivid picture of the country.... Read Full Review
