LoveReading Says
First book in The Sarsen fantasy series, Simon Batsman’s The Curiosities of Perciville Harper boasts wonderful world-building from the off, when we’re drawn into the tiny island of Marrow Myre: “It was often remarked that the people of Marrow Myre were a strange and ancient race. That their blood was the most closely related to people from an age long past”. They were also a “kind and hospitable people, devoted to their land and forever opening their doors”.
The island is home to Fjona Sarsen, a young woman who lives a quiet life in the loft of her parents’ house. Quiet, that is, until a stranger arrives and changes everything when Fjona is drawn into a realm of magic, sages and an apocalyptic curse.
At once a personal journey and a high-stakes quest, The Curiosities of Perciville Harper is a characterful, peril-packed lyrical start to The Sarsen series.

The Curiosities of Perciville Harper Synopsis
“Why so many questions?”
“I find you mysterious. I’ve never so much as heard of magic, let alone someone who can actually do it.”
On the small island of Marrow Myre, Fjona Sarsen lives a quiet, sheltered existence, away from the chaos and mystery on the mainland of the Arvum.
But when a dark-haired stranger arrives on the island, Fjona is woefully underprepared for the turn her life is about to take.
Swept into the world of sages, curses, and the art of manipulation, Fjona embarks on a journey of discovery as she learns the skills needed to become a powerful sage. With an apocalyptic curse threatening to destroy the Arvum and all its inhabitants, she and her companions must act fast if they are to locate the key to containing the Eight Afflictions, before it’s too late…

About Simon Batsman
Simon Batsman is the author of the upcoming Sarsen series. Much of his inspirations are drawn from his knowledge and experience in cultural heritage, having graduated from the University of Winchester with a First Class degree in Archaeology and working in the industry since 2017.
From a young age, his creative outlet was writing, though not in the form of literature.
Songwriting, instead, was Simon's main passion as he emulated his favourite artists with a guitar or piano, composing a vast catalogue of music during a period of nearly 20 years. When living in Oxford, he became a regular fixture at several small venues across the city and nearby towns, sitting behind a piano and entertaining Friday night audiences with an electric set of popular covers and impassioned originals.
In 2020, Simon relocated with his now-wife to Worcestershire, settling down in Droitwich for a couple of years where he started work on his New Adult Fantasy series. They now live on the edge of the Cotswolds, happily married and with a baby boy.
