In My Lady’s Secrets we see a rebellious side to Regency England. Cressida has spent the last few years as part of the baggage train for British soldiers fighting in Spain. Estranged from Lord Greville by scandal, she survives on her wits until captured and brought back to England by none other than her husband. Now, rather than face the gallows she must entrap George Byron, one of the most famous men in the country and a childhood friend, all with her brooding and stunning husband looking on.

The shared history between all of the characters oozes off the page as does the sense of uncertainty caused by the backdrop of civil unrest, The Luddites and the death of Prime Minister Lord Perceval. As the group decamps to a family seat in Scotland for the Summer there are secrets and hidden agendas to be found on every page. You’re never quite sure what anyone’s motive is and the brief hints of foreshadowing are used to efficiently destabilise the reader in moments of calm. The tension between Cressida and her husband Greville smoulders throughout, unable to resist even when they're furious at one another but the secrets between them are too big for them to reunite properly. The “will-they, won’t they” dynamic isn't about whether they’ll relent physically - that ship has sailed - but whether they’ll let go of their pride and let their guard down long enough to actually be honest with one another. Cressida is the unstoppable force always looking to run, Greville the immovable object determined not to turn his back on his wife again. The result is a dynamic twist on the more common high society Regency romances that makes for compelling reading.
