LoveReading Says

Issy used to spend her life at home, crafting pieces inspired by her pet chinchilla Abigail, trying to manage her depression, until a famous artist discovers her and invites her to work in London on a TV show which brings otherwise isolated crafters together.

The reader comes with Issy on her coming-of-age adventure as she discovers her sexuality (and how sex ‘can be silly’), living with a squad of equally fish-out-of-water flatmates in bizarre London rental accommodation, and meeting her surprisingly terrifying (and gorgeous) neighbour Aubrey…

A less brilliant writer would struggle to make the life of a miserable depressed person not depressing to read – but Kay manages to make it hopeful and hilarious and gentle and wise, and I have no doubt it will be painfully relatable to many of us. A love letter to artists outside the lines, from crochetters to sketchers, dabblers to obsessives. It also includes throwaway delights like being moved to tears by a fox with a McDonald’s bag in its mouth. Kay is particularly brilliant at writing dialogue, texts, and shenanigans that feel like the real conversations between funny friends, and I loved every character, from the flatmates everyone dreams of to the cameo from a big-personalitied tattoo artist. There are also properly squeal-out-loud romantic lines which had me swooning on the tube.

Fans of Laura Kay will absolutely love Making It
