LoveReading Says

It’s been an agonising wait to see what was to come of our favourite characters after that conclusion of House of Sky and Breath, but the time has finally arrived. The hunt to defeat the Asteri and save her loved ones takes half-fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan to places beyond her imagination. But will she find allies or more enemies? And will she be able to save her loved ones from the Asteri’s clutches?

I was desperate to know the fate of the characters after the massive cliffhanger we readers had been left with and dove into House of Flame and Shadow as soon as I got my hands on a copy. The first book in the Crescent City series, House of Earth and Blood was a twisting fantasy-set murder mystery. The sequel, House of Sky and Breath led us in the direction of epic fantasy, with more characters to fall in love with, each one a chess piece placed on a board ready for this final instalment. And boy, does it pack a punch. Bryce and her quick wit and three-step-ahead plans are a reliable feature once more, but that didn’t stop my heart from leaping into my throat when things were dicey for our characters.

There were times when I couldn’t bear to turn the page: during moments of tension when I dreaded what was going to happen next, or because there was a moment of respite and I… dreaded what was going to happen next. As I read I laughed at quick witted remarks, had moments when I was trying to see the words with tears in my eyes, ended chapters leaping from my seat in triumph and read paragraphs with my mouth wide open. Being already invested in the series it was easy work to become as invested in House of Flame and Shadow and I found it a worthy, action-packed addition to an already enthralling series, akin to A Court of Wings and Ruin in the ACOTAR series. Written from a perspective that I think allows you to enjoy this series even if you haven’t read other books by Sarah J. Maas, (it’s just made all the more special if you have), I’m not sure when we’ll be back in the world of Midgard and Lunathion but I would happily return if and when the opportunity arises.
