"This is an interesting take and will no doubt intrigue fans of astrology. "
A fresh new take on astrology and the zodiac to incorporate into your explorations. I’m sure I’m not the only one who knows their star sign but doesn’t really feel that it fits with my personality and even though I’ve followed my curiosity and had an online look at my birth chart, it still doesn’t seem to quite suit me. ‘The Ruby Heart of the Dragon: Sun Signs for Our Times’ by Mark Borax aims to re-evaluate the 12 signs of the zodiac, bypassing clichés and updating them for modern times. Using a charting system that was new to me, Borax introduces the Ruby Heart (your sun sign and what most people know as their star sign), the Dragontail (a sign you’re leaving behind) and Dragonhead (the sign you’re heading towards). Use this book to read about all of the different star sign combinations, then track your own for a more personal insight. This is an interesting take and will no doubt intrigue fans of astrology. Although the book starts by saying no prior knowledge of astrology is presumed, I think it is actually presumed that you know your Sun sign / Ruby Heart is. However, I have to say this book left me slightly confused as to how the Ruby Heart sign connects to the other points on Barox’s chart. Working through each chapter we get insight into each star sign with the different Dragonhead / Dragontail combinations at the end. These extra insights are repeated after both signs that are referenced (so the Scorpio Dragonhead / Taurus Dragontail insight is duplicated after the Scorpio and Taurus chapters) which encourages you to look at the paragraph in light of the specific chapter you’ve just read, although could just as easily have been featured once in a glossary. As I’ve said the Dragonhead / Dragontail combinations are explored after each chapter but I’m left slightly confused at how they link to the third point of the Dragon in Barox’s charting and a little more guidance and clarity on this aspect i think would be of benefit for those unfamiliar with this particular form of astrology. Writing based on his 35 years of counselling others and using personal anecdotes, ‘The Ruby Heart of the Dragon: Sun Signs for Our Times’ is highly readable. The text flows well and Borax’s ideas are clearly explained in a way that I think those both familiar and unfamiliar with astrology will be able to understand and find enlightening. The personal anecdotes help to illustrate his point without taking anything away from the more broadly applicable nature of the chapters. A little bit of extra clarity for me would help to turn this into an illuminating read.
