"Any young adult questioning their sexuality, or just looking for an adorable love story, will obviously enjoy Imogen, Obviously "
Imogen, world’s most earnest straight ally, goes to visit her friend Lili at her new college, worrying about fitting in with Lili’s new all queer friendship group. When Lili reveals that she had told a silly lie to them, when she first started at the college, that she and Imogen used to date, Imogen is more than happy to play along. But Imogen finds that this new label of bisexual, bestowed upon her as a favour to her friend, leads to some big questioning… especially combined with a growing infatuation with Lili’s boyish, freckle-faced friend Tessa.
This is such a warm, welcoming, tender novel about first love and the nuances of questioning your identity as a young person. It gently and sensitively handles different sides of the arguments around labels, and shows how friends can inadvertently help or hinder that process of coming out. The reader feels incredibly protective of sweet Imogen, who is really trying her best and really doesn’t want to overstep or appropriate queerness, and yet whose fears around this (and the assumptions of her friends) prevent her from validating her own very real feelings for Tessa.
The friendship group feels believable and playful, and the love story between Imogen and Tessa is absolutely adorable. It’s all very, very lovely – obviously.
