Having read this book, it is clear the author is passionate about her subject.
The book is so well researched, informative, and detailed.
It tackles four main topics.
• Challenging racism
• Diversifying the curriculum
• Using appropriate tutor, teaching time and PSHE
• Interpreting the equality act
This book is full of sensitive issues and many topics that over the years have been skirted around, pushed under the carpet, or avoided. It is however sometimes difficult to grasp the extent and breadth of racism when you are a white woman working and living in the rural south. Whilst you might have empathy, you cannot truly understand the whole picture of institutional racism.
The many insightful personal stories used in the book to illustrate the various types and degrees of racism, go a long way to educate and inform. I thought one analogy was particularly clear and helpful: -
Equality – on the planning committee
Diversity – invited to the party
Inclusion – invited to dance
Belonging – choosing a song
The book is very readable and approachable. It questions a lot of issues involved with both passive and aggressive racism and tackles different ways to prevent them. As the author says, becoming an anti-racist educator is a marathon and not a sprint. The book is very direct in its approach and challenges the feint hearted. Throughout the chapters there is a very strong message to break down barriers and take on personal responsibility, not to pass on the baton.
In many ways it is not an easy book to read. It is both probing and hard hitting, tackling both sensitive and very topical issues. It is not a book you can simply pick up and put down, but it is packed with a lot of heartfelt, personal messages. One particular sentence stuck in my mind and that is ‘on form filling, there is no option to choose black British’. I think that says a lot.

About Aisha Thomas
Aisha Thomas is the founder of Representation Matters Ltd (c), an organisation that provides workshops, talks and consultancy on diversity, equity and inclusion for schools and businesses. She was formerly an assistant principal at a large secondary school in Bristol. Aisha provides training on race in education at the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England and in schools nationwide.
In 2018, she presented a documentary for the BBC investigating the low number of Black teachers in Bristol, and in 2019, Aisha delivered a powerful TEDxBristol talk called 'Why Representation Matters'. Aisha is currently working on a number of local and national projects, including Beyond the 26, which collects stories and experiences from Black and racially minoritised educators in Bristol. She also contributed to a series of videos on allyship for BBC Teach.
