Thomas Simmons has been an assistant and associate professor at the University of Iowa and MIT, and an instructor at Grinnell College. He has a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and has held a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in poetry at Stanford University. An FAA-licensed pilot, he flew from both American coasts, the Midwest, Kenmore Air Harbor in Washington, and Merill Field in Alaska until grounded by the medical wing of the FAA in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for dysthymia. Now retired, he lives in Grinnell, Iowa, USA. His next two books-Experiencing Intelligence: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (2022) and At Life's Edge: Biological Fragility and Some Visionary Alternatives (2023)-will both appear from Austin Macauley. His fourth collection of poetry, Night, is under review at Wesleyan University Press.
