Sherlock Holmes was a late Victorian and Edwardian consulting detective, known both for his pioneering work in the scientific aspects of criminology and for his powers of deduction and observation. From 1881 his many cases were well recorded by his friend and sometime flatmate Dr John Watson, and some of these exploits have subsequently been made into feature films and TV series.
