Alvin Rakoff is an award-winning film and TV director, producer and writer who was worked with a who's who of acting icons across six decades. Born in Canada in 1927, he has spent the bulk of his career in England and has directed more than 100 landmark television plays, as well as a dozen feature films and numerous stage productions. Among other awards, he is twice winner of the International Emmy Award, for A Voyage Round My Father, starring Laurence Olivier, and Call Me Daddy, starring Donald Pleasence. He has directed acting legends including Michael Caine, Richard Harris, Judi Dench, Ava Gardner, Peter Sellers, Jeremy Irons, Henry Fonda, John Gielgud, Michael Gambon, Rex Harrison, Roger Moore and many more. He is also noted for launching the careers of both Sir Sean Connery, giving the actor his first lead role in 1957 BBC drama Requiem for a Heavyweight, and Alan Rickman, whose first professional role was in Rakoff's 1978 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Rakoff is the author of three novels. His first, “& Gillian”, was translated into 10 languages while his second “Baldwin Street” was about his childhood in Toronto. He is based in London.
