Tiger of Drass: Capt. Anuj Nayyar, 23, Kargil Hero
"In May 1999, the Kargil insurgency was still being viewed as a routine affair. No one quite understood the magnitude of the situation. However, it soon emerged that infiltrators had captured high-altitude posts vacated by Indian soldiers during the winter months and thus had a tactical upper hand, while the Indian Army struggled with intelligence. For the next month or so, Capt. Anuj Nayyar and the men of 17 Jat went on various reconnaissance missions in the boulder-strewn Drass sector where enemy troops had set up base. They fought relentlessly in a gruesome battle for two nights in July, before securing the peak that was critical to the success of Operation Vijay and India's victory in Kargil. Amid heavy artillery and mortar fire, they destroyed four enemy bunkers and neutralized tens of infiltrators in close combat. During the attack on the fourth bunker, the twenty-three-year-old captain was hit by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade, dying instantly but saving the lives of fifteen men in the process, who eventually finished the mission and hoisted the Indian flag on the peak. For motivating his command by personal example and going beyond the call of duty, Capt. Anuj Nayyar was awarded India's second-highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra, in 2000. This is his story."

The 24th Mile: An Indian Doctor's Heroism in War-torn Burma
"'A story of heroism, grit and courage and most eminently readable: since it is also filled with humour and fun.' Fali S. Nariman Dr Jehangir Anklesaria has come up the hard way. Having graduated from medical college in Bombay in 1914, he launches his medical career in Rangoon. Life is good until December 1941, when the Burmese city is bombed by the Japanese, and everything changes overnight. Duty-bound, he decides to stay back and join the war effort, working tirelessly to quell a cholera epidemic. Under relentless attack, the army falls back towards the Indian border, where Jehangir suffers an ambush, losing all he has to rogues at gunpoint. Now he is just one of thousands crawling their way up and down the 5,000-foot-high, jungle-clad mountains of Assam, his body ravaged by malaria, dysentery, blood-sucking leeches and starvation. In The 24th Mile, Tehmton S. Mistry, part of the next generation of Jehangir's larger family, evocatively recreates the story of his grit and heroism in his death-defying journey to safety."

[Hindi] - Cric Panda Pon Pon Pon
Rishabh Pratipaksh's first collection of stories has a riotous cast—ranging from prostitutes who read slurs etched by men about hookers in public urinals; mobs that wish to destroy the idea of Gandhi each time they get ready to commit hate crimes; a society that shuns rape survivors but turn them into goddesses the minute they die, the dead 'Shravan Kumars' of a family who is burdened by their parents' dangerous expectations; an upper-caste Bhura Pandey who helps his scheduled caste childhood friend elope with a brahmin girl; two small-time criminals who are plotting to bump off their gangster mentor; and an adolescent girl who is trying to deal with the first day of her period. Rishabh's stories are definitely the finest to come from Hindi literature in recent times. They gratify, entertain, unnerve and shock, all at once."
