When people are in a chronic fight-or-flight state, stress hormones are released, and those hormones have a huge influence in sensitizing nerves. When the nerves are sensitized, everything just hurts more. The way that we think and feel about our pain can also influence the sensitization of nerves because our general anxiety leads to the release of more stress hormones, and the cycle perpetuates. Tapping is so effective at relieving chronic pain because it helps patients release the unresolved emotions that are keeping the body in a stressed-out state. By tapping to remove the negative emotional charge from specific events and other past and current issues, the brain gets the message that it is safe to relax tense muscles and lessen nerve sensitivity.
