Discourse on Metaphysics - Unabridged
Written in 1686 by the celebrated German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, Discourse on Metaphysics is a short, early work in which Leibniz explains how the Earth, which was created by God (an undeniably perfect being), is therefore blessed with the same purity and perfection as its creator. Leibniz was one of the most important philosophers of the Enlightenment era and was a contemporary of Isaac Newton. But today, Leibniz's best remembered for his work in developing differential and integral calculus. A renowned rationalist - ranked with Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza - Leibniz himself made extraordinary discoveries in the fields of - among others- philosophy, politics, theology, history, philology, law and politics. A seeming autodidact, Leibniz authored tens of thousands of letters and manuscripts on such disparate topics as physics, biology, geology and computer science.

In Our Time - 1923 Edition - Unabridged
In 1923, journalist and budding fiction writer Ernest Hemingway penned eighteen original short stories and published them in the magazine The Little Review with the help of his friend Ezra Pound. Hemingway would later add to this collection and re-publish the stories in 1925 under the same title and - after adding an additional story - would again republish the entire volume in 1930, again as 'in our time' (all in lower case). Presented here are the original eighteen 'vignettes' as Hemingway originally published them in 1923. This collection of short stories would mark one of the most auspicious and earth-shattering debuts by an author in literary history and also introduced the world to the fictional character of Nick Adams, a protagonist Hemingway would re-visit repeatedly in his career. Within a few years, Hemingway would become known as one of the most important voices of his generation and his stark prose - lean and brutal at times - would be imitated by generations of writers who followed him.

Given the tumultuous political era in which he lived, Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527), the Italian Renaissance author, philosopher, historian and diplomat, had a front-row seat to observe the political machinations, power struggles and dynastic changes in Renaissance Europe. He would compile these observations in 'The Prince,' which would swiftly gain a reputation both as a simple treatise on how to achieve and wield political power as well as an immoral, by-the-numbers account of how tyrants can seize and maintain dictatorships. As a result of the teachings in this book, Machiavelli's very name has become an adjective - 'Machiavellian' - that has come to denote political deception, cold-blooded calculation and the use of treachery as a means to seize power. It is presented here in its original and unabridged format, translated from the Italian by Luigi Ricci.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Unabridged
F. Scott Fitzgerald created the novella 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' as a short story, originally published in Collier's magazine in 1922. It tells the tale of Benjamin, son of Roger Button, who was born as an old man and who, over the course of his life, miraculously ages backwards. Beginning life as an octogenarian in his crib, Benjamin grows 'older' while his body, conversely, appears younger and younger with each passing birthday. The story takes us through Benjamin's entire life; his difficult adolescence, his marriage, life as a soldier and father and, ultimately, his inevitable descent into infanthood. At once hilarious, frightening and satiric, Fitzgerald's wonderful story has been adapted for both the stage and screen and is presented here in its original, unabridged format.

The Sun Also Rises - Unabridged
Ernest Hemingway's first novel, 'The Sun Also Rises,' follows the adventures of a group of young, hard-drinking, American expatriates - which Hemingway refers to as the 'Lost Generation' - as they pinball through Europe, from France to Spain and back again. Directionless, disillusioned and fueled by copious amounts of alcohol, narrator Jake Barnes takes the reader into the heart of 1920's Europe, particularly Paris and Pamplona (where the characters witness the infamous running of the bulls and Jake develops as fascination with bullfighting). At once cynical and satiric, 'The Sun Also Rises' was the first cry of a new literary voice that would come to dominate the first half of the 20th century. The seminal novel from Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway, the book appears here in its unabridged and original format.
