Thinking in Colour: A BBC documentary collection
Gary Younge explores race, society and Black history in these five fascinating documentaries Author, broadcaster and sociology professor Gary Younge has won several awards for his books and journalism covering topics such as the civil rights movement, inequality and immigration. In this documentary collection, the former Guardian US correspondent turns his attention to current American political and social issues, including populist conservatism, and African-American identity. In Thinking in Colour, he examines racial 'passing': light-skinned African-Americans who decided to live their lives as white people. Looking at the topic through the prism of Nella Larsen's 1929 novella Passing, Gary hears three astonishing personal stories, and probes the distinction between race and colour. Recorded shortly after the historic 2008 election, The Documentary: Opposing Obama follows Gary as he travels through Arkansas and Kentucky, talking to people who see Barack Obama's presidency as nothing but bad news, and hearing their hopes and fears for the future. In The Wales Window of Alabama, Gary recounts how the people of Wales helped rebuild an Alabama church, where bombers killed four girls in 1963. Hearing of the atrocity, sculptor John Petts rallied his local community to raise money, and subsequently created a new stained glass window that has become a focus for worship and a symbol of hope. In Ebony: Black on White on Black, we hear the history of Ebony, the magazine that has charted and redefined African-American life since its launch in 1945. But what is its place in the world today, and does it still speak to contemporary African-Americans? And in Analysis: Tea Party Politics, Gary assesses the Tea Party movement, a US right-wing protest group that objects to big government and high taxes. He finds out what sparked this grass-roots insurgency, who its supporters are, and analyses its impact. Production credits Presented by Gary Younge Thinking in Colour Produced by Caitlin Smith Executive Producer: Tony Phillips With Bliss Broyard, Anthony Ekundayo Lennon, Georgina Lawton and Professor Jennifer DeVere Brody.Excerpts from Passing by Nella Larsen read by Robin Miles First broadcast BBC Radio 4, 6 May 2021 The Documentary: Opposing Obama Produced by Neal Razzell First broadcast BBC World Service, 1-8 February 2010 The Wales Window of Alabama Produced by Nicola Swords First broadcast BBC Radio 4, 10 March 2011 Ebony: Black on White on Black Produced by Mark Burman Readers: Ricky Fearon and Amaka Okafor First broadcast BBC Radio 4, 10 June 2013 Analysis: Tea Party Politics Produced by Emma Rippon With Andrew Neil, Frank Luntz, David Frum and Rand Paul First broadcast BBC Radio 4, 1 March 2010 ©2021 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd (P)2021 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd

I, Regress: The Complete Series 1-2: A BBC Radio 4 comedy drama
All ten episodes of the dark, surreal comedy featuring Matt Berry's twisted regression therapist Unorthodox, unpredictable, and verging on the unprofessional, Dr Berry is a deeply disturbing hypnotherapist. His experimental regressive technique is both strange and terrifying, and involves taking unsuspecting clients on unsettling journeys through their subconscious. Each episode sees him dealing with a patient who needs treatment for a particular problem. There's Karen House-Water, who's aquaphobic (and therefore afraid of half her own name); Ray Highknock, a smoking addict who wants to kick the habit; a pair of East End twins with unexpected past lives and a man who's scared of everything about cats (including the musical). As the doctor puts them into a trance, we take a trip into the deepest recesses of their minds, experiencing alongside them the dreamlike - or nightmare-like - situations that their brains (and Dr Berry) have created. But as they're faced with talking dolphins, an interplanetary voyage, the inside of a whale and the God of Thunder, they soon realise that the cure could be worse than the disease... Brilliantly bizarre and an ideal late-night listen, this dark, Lynch-meets Kaufman-style series won the 2012 Writers' Guild Award for Best Radio Comedy. It stars Matt Berry (Toast of London, The IT Crowd) as Dr Berry, with a stellar cast including Katherine Parkinson, Simon Greenall, Morgana Robinson, Bob Mortimer, Steve Pemberton and Daisy Haggard. Cast and credits Written and performed by Matt Berry With Katherine Parkinson, Tara Flynn, Alex Rivers, Paul Moriarty, Simon Greenall, Jack Klaff, Morgana Robinson, Derek Griffiths, Alex Lowe, Deeivya Meir, Nick Lucas, Simon Bubb, Alan Ford, Lewis MacLeod, Tracy-Ann Obeman, Bob Mortimer, Amaka Okafor, Steve Pemberton, Daisy Haggard, Steve Furst, Isabel Fay, Daisy Beaumont, Julia Deakin, Michael Shelford Produced by Sam Bryant First broadcast on BBC Radio 4, 3 January-7 February 2012 (Series 1), 3-24 April 2013 (Series 2) ©2021 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd (P)2021 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd

Brought to you by Penguin. Kai lives in a mixed-race family on a rural council estate in Somerset where he and his three older sisters have three different dads, and his mum is being led into crack addiction by his petty-thief father. He idolises his dad, adores his friend Saffie and the school rabbit Flopsy, and is full of ambition to be the fastest runner in Middledown Primary. He and Saffie build a secret world of friendship in the school garden. But Kai's natural optimism, imagination and energy run up against adult behaviour he doesn't understand: his parents' on-and-off romance, his dad's increasing addiction and the limitations of poverty. Despite the people who try to look out for him, notably his loving Nanny Sheila and his big sister Leah, Kai's life drifts towards a tragedy from which it is hard for him to recover. The refuge he seeks in his love of nature, and the wild rabbits who have made their burrows in the woods, may not be refuge enough. Karla Neblett has created a vivid language that is both crafted and raw to tell a story of class, race and how our society fails working class young men. 'A brilliant debut; vivid and compelling.' Brought to you by Penguin. This Penguin Classic is performed by Amaka Okafor, an acclaimed stage actress and composer who performs all over the country at venues such as The National Theatre, The Old Vic and National Theatre Scotland. A classic, brilliant and layered novel that has been at the heart of racial identity discourse in America for almost a century. Clare Kendry leads a dangerous life. Fair, elegant, and ambitious, she is married to a white man unaware of her African American heritage and has severed all ties to her past. Clare's childhood friend, Irene Redfield, just as light-skinned, has chosen to remain within the African American community, but refuses to acknowledge the racism that continues to constrict her family's happiness. A chance encounter forces both women to confront the lies they have told others - and the secret fears they have buried within themselves. © Nella Larsen 1929 (P) Penguin Audio 2020

Wolf Country is a powerful dystopian vision in the spirit of Black Mirror and Never Let Me Go. Ownership of land outside the city is the preserve of a tiny elite, and the rest of the population must spend to earn a Right to Reside. Ageing has been abolished thanks to a radical new approach, replacing retirement with blissful euthanasia at a Dignitorium. When architect Philip goes missing, his wife Alice risks losing her home and her status, and begins to question the society in which she was raised. Her search for him uncovers some horrifying truths about the fate of her own family and the reality behind the new social order. 'A chilling and politically astute dystopia.' JANE ROGERS

Speeches of Note: A celebration of the old, new and unspoken
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Speeches of Note by Shaun Usher, compèred by Richard Cordery, and with speeches read by a variety of narrators. SPEECHES OF NOTE: seventy-five extraordinary ways to step into someone else's shoes. From Shaun Usher, the author of the international bestseller LETTERS OF NOTE, comes an obsessively curated, richly illustrated and sumptuously produced collection of speeches from throughout the ages. Discover speeches that altered the course of history, like NELSON MANDELA's on the day he became South Africa's first black President, and outpourings of much-needed change, such as the impassioned, impromptu appeal for women's rights from SOJOURNER TRUTH, an African-American woman born into slavery. Expect the gloriously unexpected, as KERMIT THE FROG takes to the podium, and celebrate lives well-lived, including TILDA SWINTON's tribute to 'every alien's favourite cousin', DAVID BOWIE. While some speeches are heard by millions, some remain unspoken: the secret draft prepared for QUEEN ELIZABETH II during a military exercise for World War III, and PRESIDENT NIXON's chilling public announcement should NEIL ARMSTRONG and BUZZ ALDRIN become stranded on the Moon. Surprising, inspiring and shocking; moving, comforting and enlightening.
