Saved: A War Reporter's Mission to Make It Home
'An affecting, singular story...a bracing tale of life on the edge of death.' —Kirkus Reviews When veteran war reporter Benjamin Hall woke up in Kyiv on the morning of March 14, 2022, he had no idea that, within hours, Russian bombs would nearly end his life. As a journalist for Fox News, Hall had worked in dangerous war zones like Syria and Afghanistan, but with three young daughters at home, life on the edge was supposed to be a thing of the past. Yet when Russia viciously attacked Ukraine in February 2022, Hall quickly volunteered to go. A few weeks later, while on assignment, Hall and his crew were blown up in a Russian strike. With Hall himself gravely injured and stuck in Kyiv, it was unclear if he would make it out alive. This is the story of how he survived—a story that continues to this day. For the first time, Hall shares his experience in full—from his ground-level view of the war to his dramatic rescue to his arduous, and ongoing, recovery. Going inside the events that have permanently transformed him, Hall recalls his time at the front lines of our world’s conflicts, exploring how his struggle to step away from war reporting led him back one perilous last time. Featuring nail-biting accounts from the many people across multiple countries who banded together to get him to safety, Hall offers a stunning look at complex teamwork and heartfelt perseverance that turned his life into a mission. Through it all, Hall’s spirit has remained undaunted, buoyed by that remarkable corps of people from around the world whose collective determination ensured his survival. Evocative, harrowing, and deeply moving, Saved is a powerful memoir of family and friends, of life and healing, and of how to respond when you are tested in ways you never thought possible.

Who Gets Believed?: When the Truth Isn’t Enough
Brought to you by Penguin. 'I knew this from the beginning, when I was inside the lorry, thinking about truth. If you are a good storyteller you will be trusted, get a life, and escape from hell. But what do you need to do to be trusted, if telling the truth is not enough?' - Aso, a refugee working with Freedom from Torture Aso is one of many powerful voices in Dina Nayeri's wide-ranging, groundbreaking new book, which combines deep reportage with her own life experience to examine what constitutes believability. Intent on exploring ideas of persuasion and performance, Nayeri takes us behind the scenes in emergency rooms, corporate boardrooms, asylum interviews and into her own family, to ask - where lies the difference between being believed and being dismissed? What does this mean for our culture? As personal as it is profound in its reflections on language, history, morality and compassion, Who Gets Believed? investigates the unspoken social codes that determine how we relate to one another. 'I was hugely moved by this book. Who Gets Believed? is essential reading, an extraordinary labour of love and hope that is destined to become indispensable in the continuing struggle for justice' - John Burnside ©2023 Dina Nayeri (P)2023 Penguin Audio

City of Newsmen: Public Lies and Professional Secrets in Cold War Washington
Americans' current trust in journalists is at a dismayingly low ebb, particularly on the subject of national and international politics. It might be tempting to look back to the mid-twentieth century, when the nation's press corps was a seemingly venerable and monolithic institution that conveyed the official line from Washington with nary a glint of anti-patriotic cynicism. As Kathryn McGarr's City of Newsmen shows, however, the real story of what Cold War-era journalists did and how they did it wasn't exactly the one you'd find in the morning papers. City of Newsmen explores foreign policy journalism in Washington during and after World War II-a time supposedly defined by the press's blind patriotism and groupthink. McGarr ventures into the back hallways and private clubs of the 1940s and 1950s to show how white male reporters suppressed their skepticism to build one of the most powerful and enduring constructed realities in recent US history-the Washington Cold War consensus. Though by the 1960s, this set of reporters was seen as unduly complicit with the government-failing to openly critique the decisions and worldviews that led to disasters like the Vietnam War-McGarr shows how self-aware these reporters were as they negotiated for access, prominence, and, yes, the truth-even as they denied those things to their readers.

STFU: The Power of Keeping Your Mouth Shut in a World That Won’t Stop Talking
Would our lives, relationships and careers be better if we just STFU for a while? We live in a world that doesn’t just encourage overtalking, but practically demands it. When success is measured by how much attention we can attract, how long we can hold on to the mic, it’s no wonder that we feel compelled to spout endlessly on Twitter, to document every detail of our lives on Instagram, start that podcast, or lead that conference. And yet, oddly enough, the most powerful and accomplished people in the world aren’t part of that chorus—they’re reserved, they listen, and when they do speak they’re considered. Tim Cook, President Obama, the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg all have seemed to understand the secret golden rule: talk less, get more. There are entire industries designed to help us amplify our voices, experts who are just dying to coach us on how to talk better, but nobody is teaching us how to STFU for a while. Former Forbes journalist Dan Lyons takes us on a sharp, funny, fascinating deep dive through our incessant noise-making – talking to communications experts, neuroscientists, psychiatrists and Silicon Valley executive coaches the world over to understand the science and culture behind why we can’t stop talking, and how ultimately we can learn to speak less – and with more intention – to improve our lives.

Kneading Journalism: Essays on baking bread and breaking down the news
“Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.” By the time a photographer spotted these words on a shirt at a campaign rally for Donald Trump in November 2016, it had long been clear that a growing number of Americans had not-so-subtle reservations about journalists. In an age that some demonize the media as an “enemy of the people,” it’s time for a heart-to-heart about what journalism is, and what it could be. And while we break down the news business, let’s also bake some bread. In Kneading Journalism, award-winning international journalist Tony Ganzer provides an insider's view of the Fourth Estate through compelling personal narratives and keen insights. Essays transport the reader from a bread riot before the French Revolution, to the inside of Germany’s public media and bread industries, to the streets of post-revolutionary Cairo, all while exploring the who, what, and why of journalism. Kneading Journalism provides readers bite-sized thoughts on journalism and society, and basic bread recipes for any level of baker. Before we can break bread, we need to bake bread.
