'Der Sturm' ist eine Hommage an Shakespeares letztes Stück und behandelt ähnliche Themen, wobei einige seiner Dialoge in die Erzählung eingeflochten werden. Er enthält Anspielungen auf den Science-Fiction-Klassiker 'Forbidden Planet' aus den 1950er Jahren und Michael Crichtons 'Sphere', die beide von Shakespeares Werk beeinflusst wurden.
Das UN-Kriegsschiff Magellan ist zwölf Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und erforscht ein sogenanntes kaltes Auge, eine gezeitenstarre Supererde namens Bee.
