The Apocrypha ('hidden things') are contemporaneous with the Old Testament, but were not officially accepted as part of the Bible when the Hebrew 'canon' was set. They did, however, form part of the Greek Scriptures and came into English Bibles by that route. The writings of the Apocrypha run the whole gamut of literary genres: histories, romances, devotional works, proverbs, and sermons. The King James Version (KJV), also known as the King James Bible (KJB), sometimes as the English version of 1611, or simply the Authorized Version (AV), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England, commissioned in 1604 and completed as well as published in 1611 under the sponsorship of James VI and I. The Book of Obadiah is a very short book. In this book, the prophet Obadiah warns the nation of Edom. The people of Edom were full of pride and indulged in self-exaltation. During the Babylonian attack on Israel, they sided with the oppressors. The book warns Edom on the coming of God's judgment for their pride and violence against Israel. It says that Edom will be brought down and destroyed. It then goes on to warn all nations against being prideful. In the second section of the book, the verses contain warnings for the coming nations who are prideful and pursue violence. Toward the end, God delivers a message to all those who are righteous and do good deeds. God says that He will restore His Kingdom around the New Jerusalem and expand it around all nations, punish the evil people, and bestow peace upon the rest.
After the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, and the return of the Jews from Babylon, the temple still lay in ruin. The prophet Haggai tells the people that they were building fancy houses for themselves. Instead, they should prioritize the reconstruction of the temple. Some people start to do so. A month later, Haggai returns to review the rebuilding efforts but is disappointed at the workmanship. He then tells them to purify themselves and forgo corruption and injustice in the land and approach the work with a pure heart. He attempts to inspire people by further emphasizing the importance of purity, which will bring with it God's blessing and success. He stresses the importance of repentance and covenant faithfulness in their lives. Haggai ends by bringing hope that God will establish His kingdom in Jerusalem so that people from all nations will gather there. He will defeat all evil and establish a king from the line of David. The message of this book is to seek repentance, purify one's heart, and obey God's commandments to seek His eternal favor.
