Inger Gammelgaard Madsen is a prolific Danish crime writer, most famous for her Rolando Benito detective series. She has always been creative and was a graphic designer before returning to her first love, writing. Deeply fascinated by police work and forensics, crime fiction was a natural progression, and true crime events inspire all her stories. Madsen is also the author behind the 'Teilmann' series, which was picked as an Audible Original title and published in four languages.
Johan Boje, a police assistant for Mid- and Western Jutland dies after being hit by a speeding car outside his home one late night in March. His boss, Alex Borg, is one of the firsts to arrive at the scene of the crime. It quickly dawns on him that this is not a simple case of hit-and-run, but rather a very brutal murder. Boje's nine-year-old son claims he saw the car, and that it was a police officer behind the wheel. Is it the just the traumatized boy's imagination playing tricks? A gas station's surveillance camera confirms the son's story - someone in a police uniform was driving the car that fatal night.
Rolando Benito, an investigator at the Police Complaints Authority, is put on the case. Which one of Johan Boje's colleagues had a motive to go to such extremes? Rolando Benito teams up with Anne Larsen, a journalist for TV2 East Jutland. They follow the tracks back to a fire, that had major consequences for a local family.

Inger Gammelgaard Madsen (born 1960) is a Danish author. Madsen was originally a graphic designer. She debuted with the crime novel, 'Dukkebarnet' in 2008, and has since written several books of the same genre. Among these are 'Drab efter begæring' (2009), 'Slangens gift' (2014), 'Dommer og bøddel' (2015), 'Blodregn' (2016) and 'The Cleaner' (2019).
Bertram and his three friends have formed a small gang of thieves called The Ravens. He lives alone with his mom, who works as a waitress. He doesn´t remember his father much, as the latter was arrested for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment when Bertram was only seven years old. One day, Bertram steals an expensive 'Schott Made in USA' leather jacket from a restaurant, which will have fatal consequences, and not just for Bertram. Rolando Benito, an investigator at the Police Complaints Authority, and his colleague are sent out to question two police officers. A prison guard has jumped out of his window on the fourth floor, just as the two officers were pulling up, after a noise complaint had been made for loud music coming out of his apartment. As the prison guard is the father of Rolando grandchild's school friend, he hears a rumour that a prisoner has died in the prison the man worked in, and that the prison guard had felt threated and persecuted.
Is it in fact not a suicide case at all? Anne Larsen, a journalist for TV2 East Jutland, is also on the case. Everyone seems to be connected to one prisoner, the murderer Patrick Asp, who killed his own infant baby and is a prisoner in the jail the prison guard worked at. As more mysterious deaths pile up, and a Supreme Court judge disappears without a trace, Rolando Benito and Anne Larsen team up in search of a connection. That link turns out to be Bertram and the theft of the jacket, and now Anne's head in on the line as well.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has no leads. But after interrogating Johan Boje’s wife and colleagues, Roland Benito is convinced the cop was not a faithful husband. The murderer may have had other motives than those they are working with. They interrogate Johan Boje’s son, Lukas, who was closer to the murder than previously assumed. The investigation takes a new turn when Anne Larsen seeks out Rolando. She tells him what she discovered, and that she suspects that Johan Boje’s interest in the fire was personal.
After working on a TV segment about an art exhibition opening in Randers, Anne Larsen decides to visit Liv Løkke and her brother. When she arrives at Liv’s address, she sees the door to her apartment is open, and she is afraid something happened to her. Liv is not there, but Anne has her horrible suspicions confirmed. They have to find the killer to prevent them from committing any more murders. It will be a nerve-wrecking challenge for Anne Larsen, Roland Benito, and his coworker.

His boss, Axel Borg, is one of the first people at the crime scene and here, he realizes the brutality of the murder. Johan Boje’s nine-year-old son says he saw the car and the driver, whom he claims is a police officer. Is it just the boy’s vivid imagination? When a surveillance camera confirms the son’s claims, Rolando Benito, investigator with the Independent Police Complaints Commission, is assigned to the case. Did one of Johan’s colleagues have the motive to commit the horrendous murder?
Liv Løkke works at Netto in Paderup, as a checkout girl. She hates the town, herself, her job, and her trivial life; and she barely has to look at the shoppers to know who they are. She knows most people in the neighborhood and their shopping habits. But one day, she has to look at a costumer who buys an item that reminds her of her past, and the fateful day when she saved her brother from the burning house, after a gas explosion killed her mother. It is him...her mother’s lover. He claims to have proof that her mother’s death was not an accident.
Anne Larsen, journalist with TV2 East Jutland, is covering the case of the officer from Silkeborg who was seemingly hit and killed by a colleague in front of his home. Her interest is seriously piqued by a fire accident that he was secretly investigating. She starts looking at it closer. Why was Johan Boje so interested in that case? Why could he not accept that it was just an accidental gas leak?
Liv Løkke has nightmares, after the fire and her past were brought back to her present. She is contacted by Anne Larsen. The journalist has visited her brother, and she is so curious about what she wanted from him, that she reluctantly agrees to meet her at a café in Randers. But the journalist’s claims make her so furious; she leaves the café in a rage. When she sees a newspaper poster that says Johan Boje’s son saw the murderer, she goes to Johan Boje’s house and meets the son in front of his father’s memorial.
Roland Benito, who works for the Independent Police Grievance Unit, has been sent with his colleague to interrogate two police officers, who have responded to an emergency. A prison guard has leapt from his fourth-story window, just as the two officers arrive to respond to a complaint about loud music from his flat. On the face of it, there does not appear to be anything suspicious about the situation, but when it turns out the prison guard is the father of Roland’s granddaughter’s best friend from school, he hears rumours that a prisoner has died in the prison where he used to work, and that the prison guard has been feeling threatened and monitored. Is it possible that it was not a suicide after all? Anne Larsen, a reporter from TV2 East Jutland, is also covering the story of the deaths. During her research, she comes across another death, a defense attorney who died in a car accident. She discovers that all of the deaths are linked to one of the prisoners, child murderer Patrick Asp, who is serving a life sentence after killing his own infant daughter, and who is an inmate in the prison where the prison guard was working.

Bertram is afraid to go to the police and tell them what he found in the stolen jacket, as he is a wanted criminal and does not want anything to do with law enforcement. He tries calling anonymously one evening, while drunk and after smoking a couple of joints, but the police refuse to believe him. When Bertram later discovers that his mum is in danger for her life, he tries to warn her, but she does not believe him either. He begins following her, and finds out that she is meeting with a man he does not recognise.
When Bertram asks her who he is, she finally admits that he is her boyfriend, and that they are planning on moving away from the neighbourhood and starting a new life together. Bertram decides to find out where he lives, and breaks in to find out what he can about him. As he goes through the man’s belongings, he finds a collection of fake passports, and a photograph of the man wearing the stolen leather jacket.

Anne Larsen finds out that the dead defense attorney ended her career shortly after losing a case, and that her client, child murderer Patrick Asp, was sent to prison. The father of the defense attorney, himself a supreme court justice, has vanished without a trace. Anne is at the prison to interview the warden about the prisoner who died of a drug overdose, when Patrick Asp discreetly manages to slip her a letter. He writes that he has been wrongly imprisoned, and that his wife played a part in this. Anne seeks out the woman in the restaurant where she works. She also meets her son, Bertram, and Anne gets the feeling that they are both hiding something. There is something suspicious about Uwe Finch as well, the man the mum is seeing. He acts as if he is trying to conceal his real identity, and Anne contacts Roland Benito to seek his help in determining who the man might be.
