The Practice of the Presence of God
More than three hundred years ago, a French monk named Brother Lawrence discovered how to live in God’s presence moment by moment. His reflections have become the devotional classic The Practice of the Presence of God. Discover his secret as you read this timeless classic! Brother Lawrence was born Nicholas Herman in Lorraine province, France in about 1605. He came from a humble background and was an unlearned man. He became a Christian in 1629, and after being a soldier and a footman for some time, he entered the religious community of the Carmelites in Paris in about 1649. It was there, as a lay brother, that he took the name of Brother Lawrence. He remained in the community until his death in 1691. While in the community he worked most of the time as a helper in the kitchen; it is in this specific surrounding that he became known for his simple, practical faith. Originally published in French as La pratique de la prâesence de Dieu. The Practice of the Presence of God
‘The Practice of the Presence of God’ is a collection of the teachings of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (Nicolas Herman, c. 1614 – 1691), a 17th-century Carmelite friar. The book consists of sixteen short letters, a collection of spiritual maxims, four conversations written down by Father Joseph de Beaufort and a brief bio, most likely by de Beaufort. The theme of the work is the cultivation and development of an awareness of the presence of God. Lawrence's method of acquiring the presence seems to have required discipline and willpower at first, but once cultivated, it became effortless. The book became quite popular among both Catholics and Protestants, and was praised and recommended by, among others, John Wesley, Willard L Sperry, A. W. Tozer and Hannah Whitall Smith.

The Practice of the Presence of God (Annotated)
The Practice of the Presence of God has inspired readers for generations. Brother Lawrence, also known as Nicholas Herman, was a devout French Carmelite friar of the 17th-century who’s aim in life was to simply love God with all his being and cultivate a sensitivity to the presence of God. The following book is a compilation of conversations and letters by Brother Lawrence giving us insight into his personal relationship with God and his singular focus on union with the Divine. The text was written over 300 years ago and later translated into English. Though some of the language may be dated, the heart of his message shines through with clarity, that the sensitivity to the presence of God in our lives and our love for Him is, and ought to be, our highest priority. Everything is second to love. Through his teachings, we learn how we ourselves can grow and mature in conversing with God on a daily basis. The impact of this simple, yet powerful book can no doubt be life transforming. I hope that as you read you find encouragement in the power and simplicity of prayer. May you be blessed in your pursuit of God and be transformed by the freedom we have in Christ to come directly to the Father in conversation and friendship.

The Practice of the Presence of God: Being Conversations and Letters of Nicholas Hermann of Lorraine
"My most usual method is this simple attention, an affectionate regard for God to whom I find myself often attached with greater sweetness and delight than that of an infant at the mother's breast. To choose an expression, I would call this state the bosom of God, for the inexpressible sweetness which I taste and experience there." This is how "Brother Lawrence" describes his constant practice of speaking with and reflecting upon God amidst the mundane tasks of life. Nicholas Herman (c. 1605-1691) was born in Lorraine, France, and served as a cook and shoe repairer at a Carmelite monastery. He was only a lay member of the order, and walked with a limp from injuries incurred as a soldier, yet his private thoughts provide a wellspring of devotional insight and refreshment.
