The Bookseller

DS Cross at his finest and his most vulnerable

As a devoted fan of the DS Cross detective series, I eagerly devoured this seventh book in just a few days.

In this gripping tale, the endearing and brilliant autistic detective, DS George Cross, takes on the investigation of a bookseller's murder in a bookshop specialising in rare editions in central Bristol—a place brimming with personal history for George, as he often visited it with his father as a child. The narrative keeps readers on their toes with a host of potential suspects, unraveling clues, and a masterful whodunnit plot. Just as the mystery seems solved, the story delivers a surprising twist that leaves readers reeling.

Beyond the murder investigation, the story dives deep into George's personal life. His father falls gravely ill, forcing George to confront the possibility of a devastating loss—a shift that could profoundly affect his support system and sense of stability.

Adding to the emotional weight, George is shaken by news of his partner, Ottey, being promoted, which raises the question of whether anyone else could truly understand and appreciate George's unique approach to both life and work. The prospect of losing Ottey as his steadfast ally creates an undercurrent of uncertainty and vulnerability, enriching the narrative's depth.

This installment masterfully blends an intricate murder mystery with heartfelt character development, making it both a compelling read and an emotional journey. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers will find themselves reaching for the earlier books to spend more time in DS George Cross's fascinating world. (I recommend you read the series in order ASAP!)
