"The witty writing of Emerson’s “smart mouth” is on hand to help diffuse a lot of the tension and uncomfortable moments with humour."
A funny, sweet and spicy romance about finding yourself, and new love, after divorce. Emerson Vaughn is newly divorced and with her daughter away at college, the time has come for Emme to start living again. Her best friend’s generous gift of a week’s five-star stay in New York City seems to be just the ticket to help her reinvent herself, with the condition that she sees unorthodox Sex Therapist Dr Alexander Jameson. The scene is set for a story of rediscovering yourself and forging a connection in unexpected circumstances. I found ‘Butterflies’ by L.A. Nettles to be a funny, wild romance story that seemed to step away from the more common plotlines. I liked that the focus was on Emerson, a new divorcee in her forties. I found this character choice made for a stronger, self-assertive female lead than a lot of the other romance stories I’ve read. The setup of Emme and Alexander as client and Psychiatrist allows for vulnerabilities to be explored, as well as an open and honest communication about sex and relationships. All the while building the romantic tension between the two. As you would expect, there’s plenty of spice in this storyline, but it’s not gratuitous or at the expense of the plot. We see Emme, with the strong foundation of her friend and her daughter, slowly start to feel more self-confident, and a really sweet relationship develops between her and Alexander. The witty writing of Emerson’s “smart mouth” is on hand to help diffuse a lot of the tension and uncomfortable moments with humour. I thought this was an entertaining and escapist romance story full of wit and charm.
