The death of her father when she was 13 left Mary Jumbelic with questions about mortality, these questions lead her to explore then have a successful career in pathology, giving the answers to families about the deaths of their loved ones that she desperately wanted as a child. Some of these chapters have previously been published in a range of different publications, but this is Mary Jumbelic, M.D.’s first book. Each case and event is presented as its own self-contained vignette. Sometimes they begin in the autopsy room or at a crime scene, others in court, or sounds and trips outside of work bring to mind a case like a flashback. I liked this structure, it was concise but as a reader you still get enough information to bring the author and the moment to life.
Dr Jumbelic had a varied 25 year career, working on the harrowing scenes of 9/11, or in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and TWA Flight 800 as well as. Interspersed with these cases is an account of a varied family life, growing up and a first job selling flowers, trips to children’s wrestling matches, family loss and maladies as well as her own battle with sepsis. The writing is compelling and Here, Where Death Delights would definitely be a book I would recommend to those interested in pathology. The way the book flows I think that readers interested in forensic crime fiction would also enjoy this book, getting a more realistic perspective of the work carried out in popular CSI shows and books.
