Ancient beliefs intertwine in this quest-filled fantasy story. ‘Till Myth Do Us Part’ by Darius Ebrahimi interweaves myth and legends while spinning a tale of love. This book has a unique twist that all the characters we meet are already dead. Kai is a hero, residing in Elysium with his family, and battling with monstrous “myths”. The afterlife isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, with the threat of these myths, an unrelenting heat that’s causing drought and Kai’s love and second wife, Sophia, separated from him and in the more perilous city of Asphodel. To have a chance at being reunited with his love again, Kai will have to face down gods, monsters and even himself. I liked the interweaving of different mythologies throughout the narrative, from the Norse world tree Yggdrasil to the Greek references to Cerebus and Zeus and Egyptian Pyramids being some of the most obvious. I think that the author did well to merge the different systems together, both the references I spotted and the no-doubt many I did not. I think that this is a great concept that offers plenty of scope for future books in the The Seed of Yggdrasil series. While I liked the quest and theme of the story, I would have personally liked a little more scene setting at the start. I felt like I was plunged headfirst into the story and while it is a plot filled with excitement I would have personally preferred a tiny bit more time to understand who Kai is and get my bearings at the beginning. I feel that this would have helped draw me into the story more also. I liked the different supporting characters, while we follow Kai on his quest to find and free Sophia from Irkalla, we also follow his siblings Cara and Li, who attempt to take up the mantle of hero in Kai’s absence, and leads to further exploration into what “myths” are and questions the structure of the world they are living in. I think that this would be an entertaining read for fans of mythology and folklore and ends with the door wide open for the next book in the series.
