Biblical characters fight for good and evil in this twisting thriller. A Portion of Malice (Ages of Malice, Book I) by Lloyd Jeffries is a dark religious thriller that sees Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Emery Merrick dragged into a fight between immortal forces when Billionaire Thaddeus Drake hires him to write his biography. This is a gritty read with lots of twists. The plotline is very well-crafted, the author must have extensive knowledge of religious stories in order to mould them into this thriller storyline. There’s vivid and sometimes grotesque descriptions throughout that help to draw the reader into the mire with Emery, as he is drawn into Drake’s fight to confront God as an equal. A Portion of Malice jumps between the present tense storyline, Emery’s own past and flashbacks to moments from the Bible such as the crucifixion, as we get a glimpse into the past of the immortal beings in this book. As I’ve already said, the descriptions throughout are brilliantly vivid, making the story come alive, luring me into the narrative and making me want to see what happened next. This is a well researched and well-written book that I think will appeal to fans of the thriller and horror genre.
