C.S. Lewis' A Preface to Paradise Lost essentially elaborates on and decodes Milton's phenomenally popular epic, Paradise Lost. In the book, Lewis first spends eight chapters describing and defending the style of Epic Poetry, to which Paradise Lost belongs. He distinguishes between Primary and Secondary Epic and draws parallels to the Roman poet Virgil. The remaining eleven chapters are used to discuss the theological concepts in the work, making particular note of St. Augustine's influence on Milton. He also writes about Adam and Eve, Satan, Satan's Followers, Unfallen Sexuality and The Fall, providing his own interpretation of Milton's purpose in writing the epic. It is a beneficial and important source of information for the students of English Literature, as well as the general readers interested in the subject.
