This small town mystery set in South-eastern Alaska will keep you guessing until the end. The only police officer in the small Koloshan Tlingits village in Alaska is Jonah St. Clair, a Vietnam veteran, who has returned to his childhood home and is now working to keep the peace, mindful of the ever-blurry line between traditional values and encroaching western lifestyles. First a young boy dies during a midnight ceremony, and a young runaway is convicted by the court of public opinion as Johan tries to track him down. When a local fish buyer also mysteriously disappears along with $75,000 Jonah has two people to trace and a village eager for answers. This is an intriguing mystery. I liked Jonah St. Clair, he is quite stoic at times, but it’s clear from the interactions with the other characters that he is well liked and the reader’s access to his internal monologue allows you to get to know him as he investigates these two cases and see how his past military experiences still affect him. However, I think my favourite character was Joe, the brusque but caring Café owner that makes regular appearances throughout Jonah’s day. The narrative unfolds at an unhurried pace, making sure that the reader is firmly grounded in village life as well as in the two cases. Although I did figure out a few elements of the plot, I didn’t get everything right and this mystery still kept me guessing right to the end. In all, this is a very enjoyable, easy to read and well-spun mystery that kept me intrigued right up to the end.
