In a post-conflict situation, the conflict-torn community typically faces the challenge of having to redesign its institutional framework. In this post-conflict phase, 'the' principle of democracy as represented in international law can have an effect on the course of action taken. Using the example of UN missions in Cambodia and East Timor, Buhring investigates the application of international law within a 'democratic peace building process' in terms of a (re-)construction, or in other words a strengthening of sustainable democratic structures.
